We’re going deep today sister! We’re talking about cleansing and detoxing. Dunn, dunnnn, dunnnnn…  And while this may not seem like a deep topic, just keep reading. You’ll see…

In part 1 of this Creating a Healthy Metabolism series I talked about good dietary habits that help boost it — and today what we’re talking about will build upon that.

So, when I say cleansing and detoxing what thoughts/feelings come up?

If you didn’t have a strong reaction I’d be surprised.

Because either…
A: You’ve done them, and had a terrible experience that made you feel worse about yourself.

Or B: You’ve never done one because they sound horrible and there’s no way you’d subject yourself to such craziness!

Body cleansing can absolutely be a good thing (don’t have your nutritionist come after me – I kid, I kid…) but there are VERY specific things you need to keep in mind before doing one.

I tried numerous cleanses and detoxes in my past.. I wanted to lose weight and they have a track record of doing that… So I dove in head first thinking it was a cure-all.

I’d try to trick myself into thinking it was a nice thing to do for myself. “Detoxing is an act of self-love — I’m removing my body of bad things!” I’d think… but I was kidding myself.

Deep down I really just wanted to lose the freaking weight and I was willing to try just about anything.

What I didn’t realize was how harmful these things really were for me at that time. Not necessarily to my body, but to my self-esteem.

It was only fracturing my already very damaged relationship with food and my body.

I’m not saying detoxing is evil and no one should do it. But honestly, I think most people shouldn’t until they’ve done the deeper work to have a healthy relationship with food FIRST before it can be beneficial.

This podcast is NOT about how to detox (what to eat/not to eat). It’s about understanding  the mindset you need to be in for it to be beneficial.

There are specific things that need to be present so your body doesn’t get triggered into a fight, flight or flee physiological response.

If you’re thinking about joining your bestie who’s doing one I’m encouraging you to listen to this before you commit. You have to do it for the right reasons or it’ll only make you feel worse about yourself and your body.

I also share an incredible tool to help you start intuitively eating (eat foods best for your body free of rules/restrictions (outside of allergies)) called ‘The Hunger Scale.’ This single tool has helped maaany of my clients be in a drama-free-zone when eating. Have your pen and paper ready because you’ll want to write this down.
